Four years ago on this date Malachi Mitchell Thomas was racing at the Northwest 200 in Northern Ireland. The Road Racing family already knew about Mal' especially John Burrows, who had taken him under his wing and had signed Mal' to ride for his Burrows Engineering team.
Mitchell-Thomas had taken the Irish Road Racing Championship by storm ,with a string of almost unbelievable performances. Those that 'in the know', knew that Malachi was 'special' ,touched by the gods and destined for stardom, such was Mal's overwhelming talent, Then came the Northwest and tragedy in the Lightweight race. Mal ' crashed after he hit a manhole cover, on the approach to Black Hill, that had already claimed the career of a top Irish champion earlier in the week. Malachi lost his fight for life shortly after...A needless and preventable tragedy, that robbed family of as son, and the world of motorcycle racing of a shining light for whom there were no limits.
A far better judge than I, who had raced and sometimes beaten the best of the 60's 70's and 80's said to me at Mals funeral .... "Charlie, Mal' was the best I have seen since Mike Hailwood" and who am I to disagree with those sentiments?....Sleep Well Mal' those who saw you will NEVER forget you
